Default To much fuel pressure?

i recently picked up an02 s40 that the cam gear cam off of. After checking compression I was able to get it all back together. After trying to get it to start my friend notice the smell of fuel after release the pressure from the schrader valve and it started momentarily. So we pulled the pin out of the Schafer valve and created our pub return line to a different fuel jug. With the return live slightly clamped it idles and revs fine. If I put it back together it will not start. Any ideas on where to start?

I would first test the fuel pressure. Harbor freight sells a cheap one for $20 that works fine for the home mechanic. My bet would be the fuel pressure regulator is stuck closed. Give the FPR a tap or two to see if you can free it up. I am guessing the car hasn't been running in a long time?

This weekend I put the fuel pressure tester on and it read 48#. I also put the code reader on it and it said the exhaust cam was retarded to far. That’s my bad. I then took the rear cam plug out and the cam position sensor cover and after removing the exhaust cam bolt locked the cams together and replaced the cam bolt with 0*retard in it. It now starts on its own runs for about 5 seconds and stalls. The code reader says cam position sensor or crank position sensor.
