noise from engine (flywheel area) when warm
Hi All
2005 S40 2.4I auto.
I have a noise…. What could it be?
When the car is cold the noise cannot be heard.
When the car warms up you hear a noise.
When you turn the engine off the noise continues for a split second.
Explanation: - 1. You turn the engine off and the belts stop moving and the noise is still there for a split second. 2. I am under the car with the car running and you can see a small portion of the fly wheel, you turn the car off and the flywheel stops and the noise continues for a split second.
I got a piece of hose and stuck one end in my ear and used the hose to try to pinpoint the noise. It is loudest at the flywheel inspection point.
Although the noise sounds somewhat metallic it continues after the engine has stopped moving so I’m thinking it could be a vacuum leak, but why would it be noisiest at the flywheel inspection point?
The noise isn’t throwing a code and it doesn’t appear to effect performance.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
UPDATE: -
if you remove the oil/710 filler cap, the noise stops. is this a classic symptom of the oil filter housing being bad?

Update:- i went hunting at the scrap yard and found an S40 with what looked like a recently new oil filter housing and pipes. the part number on mine was 30684381 and the new to me part has number 31338685. i looked it up and it appears that 31338685 is a new and improved replacement for 30684381.
the benefit of scrap yard hunting is that you get to take the part off someone else's car 1st, so hopefully you will be able to get the part off your own car without damaging anything.
I found that on my car the tube going from the oil filter housing to the top of the engine was very brittle. So i tried just replacing the tube with the scrap yard tube (this tube has also been redesigned) but it still made the noise, so i replace the oil filter housing and the noise has gone.
hopefully the less than $20 scrap part will keep working for a while.
