Default Oil leaks at breather/oil filter unit.

Yesterday we found the upright hose from breather/filter sliced/cut from PO tightening the clamp too tight. We assumed the oil around the area was the reason the car was going through so much oil lately. Well, 2 days after repair we are seeing more oil around the same spot. It seems it's something else. I've never seen this type of oil vapor breather pvc type setup. This is a aluminum housing with plastic resorvoir for oil catch and breather diaphragm that mounts on very front of engine. Any clues what I should look for?

In what ways can this thing go and start blowing seals? Is it when it plugs up? I don't have the classic whiney sound that blown diaphragms can create.

Yes it is, and I'm reading that these could plug up or break a diaphragm. I'm not getting the squeal, whiney sound but good amount of oil around the oil catch/ filter after degreasing other day. Could it be the catch can itself is plugged up?

So I think I found the problem, my son in law when replacing the filter put the new O-ring in but did not fit it all the way up to the lid so it wasn't sealing and doing its job. At higher Revs it must have been slinging it out of the filter. Such a simple little thing can send you off in many tangents. Glad that it was so simple. I hope anyways.

So, the O-ring at filter was not the issue. There is more oil at breather/filter area after degreasing area. Could it be infact the assy has a blockage at block where it mounts? I'm thinking since plastic is weaker than metal that oil is leaching past the plastic housing. When I open the oil filler cap there's steaming oil too. There also seems to have no vacuum when filler is opened, it seems to blow more air out. Do you think it should be removed for checking? Please advise thanks,

PS. I guess if I pull the hose it should pull vacuum right? Which one where? Thanks

A clogged PCV/filter housing is very common. It's even covered under an extended Volvo warranty.

Do most of these problems with the newer filter/breather turn out to be the unit itself or blockage at mating surface on block? If at block Im assuming it can be cleaned correct?

On another note it seems there is a Volvo 205 extended warranty that covers cars 2004-2008 for another 10 years. Yet it seems our later 2010 S40 seems to have the same breather/catch can. I'm wondering why our car would not be covered.

So, I'm just at point to order a new one but there is one hose the thicker short one on right that connects to brass pipe that troubles me. When I blow in there seems to be blockage. I don't see it come out the oil filler. I checked the pvc valve within the canister and it blows one way as it should. So im stumped. Should the right side hose be unubstructed and come out somewhere? All it does is go to underside of intake mani. Please advise, thanks
