Default p0014 and p1014

Hi all,

First time Volvo owner and thus - new member. I have a 2000 S40 with 122,000 mi. Just bought it a week ago. I knew there was a CEL and pulled the codes, but I'm pretty handy and thought I could probably fix this one. I've read through quite a bit of posts in this forum (and others) on these two codes. If cleared, the p0014 code will appear again at next startup or sometime soon afterward. Then sometime after that, I get the p1014 also. The timing belt/water pump, idler, and tensioner were replaced 20,000 miles ago. (I have previous owners paperwork)

I've done an oil change, but no fix. The exhaust cam solenoid appears to be very new looking and I've verified the timing marks all line up like they are supposed to. The one obvious issue is that it appears that the VVT gear has an oil leak. I'm kinda assuming its the VVT and not the intake cam gear based on what I've read about this little misfit. I've received some advice that based on the oil leak, replacing the VVT will probably fix p0014 and 1014 codes. I know it needs to be replaced anyway, but can anyone tell me what might be going on here? Is it the oil leak itself? or is there something wrong with the VVT that I couldn't just replace some seal and put the old gear back on?

Any advice is much appreciated... thanks!

update:

I removed the variable valve/solenoid actuator - not too hard, just for screws. I don't see any obvious oil gunk or grime. The gasket has one very small screen which stuck to the valve cover body - so I guess I'm replacing the gasket. I checked the actuator for operation by putting twelve volts across the two connectors and the solenoid sounded like it did it's job. Does anyone know the correct amount of resistance for this thing? I've ordered a manual, but haven't received it yet. I also suspect the wiring harness. It appears to have been spliced at one time so I'm thinking I want to replace it, but it's all part of one huge wiring harness that goes other places and disappears into the firewall. Can someone explain what this valve actuator does and how it works?

The reset valve has likely been replaced. The new one has a different connector which needs to be spliced in.

You're most likely going to need the CVVT hub pretty common. Especially since yours is leaking anyway.

The valve controls oil for the hub to control timing.

Thanks ES6T! Seems strange that the new one had a different connector given the reset valve is a Volvo part.

kzabrisk,
Did you fix the P1014 code? I am having the same issue as you with a 2000 s40. Timing marks line up, changed the oil, cleaned the solenoid and replaced gasket, but I still get a P1014 code.
