Default Power steering pump?

When I sit in the car i hear a whinning (almost a high pitch type)

When I turn the steering left to right the whining gets louder.

I can hear the whinie when im in the car with doors closed.

Could it be the pump?

What year is your car? The 2004.5 and newer have an electric PS pump. Some tend to be noisy especially when cold.

It's a 2005 S40 2.4i.

The whining sound is constant whether cold or hot. It gets louder when i turn the steering left or right. But when I start the car i hear the whine.

Maybe the pump needs to be changed?

There were issues with the early ones making noise and there was a redesign replacement, I believe. I don't know if there was a recall or anything though.

How does the fluid look (brown, foamy)? You might try a fluid change.

I'll check the fluid once it stops raining. How do I take the current fluid out of the tank?

What color should the fluid be?
