Pre-purchase question - speedometer not working
I like the 02 S60 we found for my wife and today I am going to go look at an 01 S40 T . I called on the Ad and the guy said the speedometer isn't working. Is that a big deal on this car. I just replaced all the bulbs on my 90 Jag instrument cluster and it was only a 15 minute procedure to remove the instrument cluster.
If it is the cluster I don't know the cost of a new cluster, maybe it is a sensor down under the car, maybe removing the cluster is a half day endeavor????
Anything to look for?

Hm? Normally I stay away from anything ABS. Outside of a relay replacement, ABS often means high dollar repairs.
So I am guessing that either ABS light should be seen or a code should be stored. Attaching my code reader should show something.

Yep....ABS bulb was illuminated.
Not a bad looking S40 with 167,000 miles on it. Engine sounded good, interior was about a 7.5 and exterior had minimal dings.
I looked and was surprised at how low an ABS pump costs. I told the owner it would cost a lot more than what I have seen. I'm accustomed to ABS pumps costing $1200/$1500 or more.
Of course it could be something other than the ABS module/pump.
At $1500 I'm tempted but spoiled. I'm spoiled because I bought our 2002 S60 for $1550 ($1800 total tax & tags) and it is absolutely a 9.7 all around.

I would check with www.MidWest-ABS.com to see what a module cost. I have no idea what the issue could be but Matt would.
