I have a 2004.5 S40 T5. My son left the keys in the ignition for a few days parked in the garage. Not sure what position they were turned to but it drained the 5 year old volvo battery completely dead. Went to Autozone gave them the specs for my car and bought a new (non-volvo) battery and put it in. Thought easy enough I'll be back on the rode in no time. Turn the ignition through to position 2 and everything lights up - entire car has power. But when I turn the ignition through position 3 the car just whines like a generator or something is running but it won't turnover and I get the dreaded Immobilizer See Manual message. I've gone through all of the internet steps...unlock/lock using key fob 5 times, disconnect battery and connect the pos/neg wires for 30secs-10mins, activated the panic alarm and put key in the ignition, checked the wires to the computer under the glove box, etc...Car is stuck in Park in my garage so trying to avoid getting it dragged out and taking it to the dealer. Called them already and they act like they've never heard of this issue so I know it's going to be an expensive route getting them involved. Is there anyway to get this car started? Please help!!

 

nothing special about an after market battery - its a standard size (ie "48" if I recall). I'd look at the fuses just to be sure then disconnect the battery again, clean the cable terminations and retighten then repeat the alarm reset procedure with the fob. When restarting did you try jumper cables just in case the new battery is bad? Not sure if your model has a second battery in the immobilizer itself that could be drained or failed...

 

Yes I tried all of those things. Not sure if my model has a second battery in the immobilizer - I forgot to ask the dealer. I've tried to reset so many times and so many ways and the car just won't start. Full power to every component in the car. This all started as soon as I disconnected the old battery and installed the new one. I called the dealer again and they said unlikely a key problem since the key seems to be operating everything else in the car. They think it may need a new immobilizer unit which could cost > $1000. I truly cannot believe how stupid this situation is.

 

Whines like the starter is spinning but the solenoid doesn't engage the starter to the flywheel?

 

Are you 100% certain that the battery you just installed is really charged up fully? The symptoms could be nothing more than a really low battery. It's certainly the first thing I'd check.

I have had immobolizer messages show up when 1) the battery was low; and 2) the battery in the keyfob was weak. I would start by checking both of those. Luckily for me, that has always solved the problem. Good luck!

 

that’s for your responses. I have tried it with a jump starter still the engine does not crank, and when I turn my key to position 3 the lights on the dash goes off.

 

Sounds like a bad battery, or a bad connection. You need to have a voltmeter (or even just a simple test light), and see if your battery is supplying 12 volts or more when the key is in the start position. If it is, then just keep moving the red lead until you figure out where it's going away (i.e. it's on one end of a cable, but not the other). Then you've found your problem.
