I went to my local agent to ask about a new key and fob i was quoted around £250 for the pair is this the cheapest i can get it done?

 

The key and remote on the S40 (and other Volvo's) is integrated to prevent theft. You have to buy the remote and key from dealer and have the remote programmed at the dealer with the car. Cost is about 300USD. You cannot buy a used one off of eBay so don't even bother. Once the remote is programmed it cannot be re-programmed. Also you can get a valet key for the car but it will only open the doors and not start the car (cost is 100USD).

 

I bought a FOB from ebay a few years back for my 2000 S40. I still had to pay the dealer program it, but I was able to save a little dough...

 

I believe the ones after 2002 cannot be reprogrammed. Does the 2000 have a seperate remote from the key?

 

so will my existing fob still work after i get a new one?

 

Yes, the 2000 model has a separate FOB and key.


My existing FOB still worked after I got the new one.

Result i contacted the previous owner and he is sending me the spare keys and fob
