Default sputtering engine loss of power

Hi everyone just today i started my car and it started sputtering and jumping from 1000rpm to 2000rpm if i did,nt touch the accelorator it would keep jumping from 1-2 rpm every couple of second. when i drive it then it jumps even when i press the pedal smoothly,
then after about a mile the engine light comes on flashing and then i loss power to the engine it onlygo up to 2000 rpm to 3000rpm with no power and won.t go any faster, and when i restart the car the engine light is off put still the car is jumping.
a couple of months ago i had driven about 20 mile i was going through my town thenand the same lack of power happened with no warning signs i got home left the car for 10 minutes started again and it was fine with no jumping or anything that was about 7 months ago until now it does'nt seem to be going away,
can anyone please help me into determining what it might be cause its x-mas week and i'd love to get it sorted before then.
P.s i drive a 2001volvo s40 1.8L GDI with 56500 on the clock

Check engine light flashing means the engine is misfiring.
Have the codes pulled.

Hi i got a mechanic to check the car won't get the codes pulled until tomorrow volvo dealers are to busy, the mechanic changed the spark plugs to no avail, but we heard a clicking noise just when you turn the ignition to setting 2 before you start the engine, it was coming from the throttle body,so i took of the hose to give a look at the flap and it seemed like it was getting stuck every time we turned the igition,it tried to open and close for about 20 seconds and then just gives up, thats what i can see with the hose off i,m not an expert and i don.t know the normal operation of a throttle body,
what would the symptoms be of your throttle body going bad and not opening and closing right?, i tried lubing it but it not getting stuck anyway so the motor could be damaged, and i checked the posisioning sensor that seem fine

I bet the coils are bad.

There is no motors connected to the throttle body.
You must have been looking at the idle motor which is normal operation.
It sweeps when the car is running.

Wouldsomeone tell me what the "coils" are briefly, I've seen this on other threads too but couldn't infer their function.

They are what supplies the engine with spark to run.
