Default Variable valve timig problem in 2002 Volvo s40

It has happened again. My 2002 Volvo s40 check engine light came on again. I beleive it is a variable valve timing (VVT) thta is faling. Where is this located ona 2002 Volvo s40 and is it easy to replace or is it a major job?

Are there any videos on how to repalce it?

Anything instructions anywhere.

Also, what is the offical name of the part so I can make sure to get a correct replacement.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Newport_j

NJ, do you have specific codes? The VVT can gum up different ways - search the board for some of Hudini's posts as he's written up on the topic. The VVT gear sits on the end of the exhaust cam shaft and is oil pressure driven. First thing to do is to pop off the timing cover to see if anything is leaking. If not it may just be the sensor or the gear is gummed up by varnish and not allowing the cam to advance. You can try a Seafoam treatment to see if that cleans out the oil ports but if its leaking you need to replace. I believe that requires removing the timing belt and cam gear so that'd be a good time to also refresh the idlers/tensioner and belt.

Okay, my specific code is ECM-61. Camshaft reset. I am not sure what it means but there seems to be a lot of talk on the internet about this code.

There is a specific part called the Camshaft Reset Solenoid. or Camshaft Reset Valve. This is the part that actually directs oil to the VVT gear. It can fail in two ways. Either the electronic component or the internal valves that direct the oil.

Here is a thread showing how it works. About halfway down the page. https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...t-80188/page2/
