My Volvo s40 2002 makes a lot of groaning noises when I make an extreme turn (say greater than 60 degrees) either left or right. My Volvo has a lot of miles on it (about 188,000) and as far a I know I have never done any work on the steering. My power sterring fluid level is fine.

How can I can stop these noises or what causes them? Is it a worn cable or belt?

Any help appreciated.
