Default What am I doing wrong

Hi.

I just installed my repaired cylinder head but I am having a problem installing the cams. The inlet cam is no problem but the exhaust is giving me a little trouble.

In the posts I have read on this issue suggests that you don't have the motor at tdc when fitting the cams however when I put the crankshaft on it's mark the no.1 piston is at tdc and no.4 piston is also at the top.

The valves on the no.4 ex cam are on the valves thus the engine will not turn.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

I spoke to a mechanic at volvo last night and he says that when the crank is on it's mark there is no way the engine will be at tdc.

I know the crank is on the correct mark so I believe there may be a problem with the crank timing gear. Is this possible? Have anybody had a problem with this gear before?

Does anybody know what is invovled with checking and replacing this gear if necessary?

Please help.

You have a pic?

When I fixed my bent valves I remember all 4 pistons were down in the bores with the crank gear on it's mark.

Correct, no piston is at TDC when the crank is set correctly. You could use the crank pin to be sure it is in the correct position. And make sure the cam is not 180 out

According to some folks I spoke the crank does spin on the crank when the dowel holes gets worn out. I hope this is the problem.

To check I need to take off the crank timing gear. Does anybody know the easiest way to do this?

The cams or in the right way. I have compared this to the photos seen on this forum so I am happy with this part.

I need to check the crank part.

Just checked the fiche from volvo witth regards to this part and realize that the information I got from my buds at home is all wrong. They have no idea when it comes to volvos.

I can't find the post about this problem where the guy posted that he had a similar problem and decided to buy a replacement engine instead of repair his old one. Does anybody know where I can find this post?

The crank timing gear is keyed... it doesn't really wear out

what i usually do is that with the cylinder head off, with the crankshaft timing on mark cylinder#1 @ TDC. slowly rotate the crank clockwise to a point that there are enough clearence even if the any of the valves are open but would not damage. then install the head. set the timing on both camshafts then rotate counter clockwise the crank back to the timing mark, then install timing belt.
