Default What does this stuff under the oil cap mean?

So I have a 2004 S40 with 1.9T engine. I was filling oil today when I noticed that the bottom of my cap has all this gunk on it. I remember watching a video where a guy said it means something, but I forgot what. I also had white smoke coming out of the oil tank, this was after that car had already ran a bit and just parked.

It's just oil sludge. These engines get very hot and over time you get some sludge built up. On the bottom of the cap or the oil fill passage it's not a problem. When it builds inside your VVT solenoid then you will have issues. In other words, your pictures look normal for a 14 year old engine.
