1. WHY? put anything other than oil in your engine? (if it's not 100% oil in your engine - it does not lubricate like oil!)

2. Would be a good idea, but (quality) regular oil works great if changed frequently.

You do have a 23 year old car - stuff happens

High mileage oil has an added "seal softener" agent to go with the standard detergents. Full synthetic is a good choice - the difference is its made from natural gas which by its nature has less sulphur than oil made via a crude oil cracking process (as the oil breaks down that sulphur can turn into acid). Just make sure you use the correct weight ie 10-30 or 5-30 per the owners manual. I've been using a high mileage synthetic for about 10 years now on our 2000 S40 and no issues with the engine or VVT. Note that synthetic is slower to break down than dino oil, it will leave less tarnish which can gum up the VVT. Just make sure you change on the standard mileage interval. Sorry say, changing over now won't really fix anything that's already worn. I do like synthetic, particularly in the winter for cold starts (yep I had to finally crank up the snowblower for the first time this year today).

as to the dreaded P0015 code, threre's been quite a few threads that talk to this - some people have had luck with seafoam, others changed the solenoid, others wound up replacing the VVT gear (got a free timing belt replacement as part of the process LOL) some have found their timing a notch off. I liked this thread where one member took the system apart to clean and polish the parts.

Happy reading and hopefully you'll get some insights and guidance here.
