What is leaking oil above #1 Spark Plug cylinder?
I was changing spark plugs and notice oil at the top of the head and it appears to be coming from whatever this is at center, left side of picture. The picture is looking as if standing on passenger side front wheel. The thing with the red and blue wire going to it. Anybody know what it is? I cleaned up the oil but those little reservoirs were full where it is stained brown.
Continuously Variable Valve Timing. Known by various other names with other brands like Honda VTEC. It uses oil pressure to advance or retard the exhaust cam through the cam gear.
Does your timing belt have oil on it? This is important because if it does you may have a leak in the CVVT cam gear itself which has been known to cause worse damage if left alone.

Thanks Hudini.. no, I do not have oil on the timing belt.
Hope you do not mind me joining this thread I have posted a query about the vvt solenoid before on this forum and with help from Hudini found out what I wanted to know at that time, could I just ask 3 more questions please
1 as anyone cured the problem of cam rattle by changing this solenoid
2 by disconnecting the solenoid and running the engine to test for pulley
failure would I put the engine management light on
3 could anyone tell me the torque figure for the 4 bolts that hold the solenoid
many thanks

Cam rattle? I'm not familiar with the term. Can you explain it a bit?
I do believe the check engine light would illuminate if you ran the engine with the CVVT solenoid disconnected. It's a guess though as I've not tried it.
I'm looking in VIDA for the solenoid torque specs in NM. Here is a website for converting to pound/feet: Convert newton meters to foot pounds - Conversion of Measurement Units
10nm is about 8 foot/pounds. It's not much. 88 inch/pounds would be more accurate with a small torque wrench.
Install the valve housing assembly
Install:
a new gasket
the valve
the screws. Tighten to 10 Nm
the connector
the upper timing cover
28: Component replacement, B4204T3 (CA) (US)

Replacing the variable valve timing (VVT) control valve

Hi Hudini, yes the rattle I am referring to may well be vvt pulley failure just looking to see if a solenoid would be a cheap fix if it is that, solenoid is now £130 pulley fix is £350-£400
at any dealer or garage in UK car only cost £500 18 months ago
many thanks again
