Where to start?
Hello all: My wife's 2000 S40 began to act up yesterday. While running an errand she turned the car off. When she started it again, it was hard starting and she had to keep the rpms high to keep it from stalling. She managed to get it home, but when I started it this morning it stalled at idle speed, plus the electrical fan started and continued when I turned the key off. After several attempts turning the key off and on again, it would still be running if I hadn't disconnected the battery. My first inclination was to see if anything was clogging the filter area, and there was a ball of fluff under the filter about the size of a peach.
Any direction as to where to go next would be wholeheartedly appreciated.

Try cleaning your MAF with MAF cleaner. Be very gentle with it though. Do not touch the metal filaments as they can get damaged very easily. Also I believe you have to take it right off to clean it.

Well I'm sorry to say that both Sam's and A&A have been victims of the digitizations of music as both are unfortunately gone. I believe that they put the Sam's sign up somewhere to commemorate the store. Well deserved as that place was awesome! Good luck with MAF.
I changed out the MAF with no change. The car refuses to idle and only runs at high rpms. I'm now like the bad mechanic that is replacing parts indescriminately. My only defense is that I also have a 2000 V40 and the parts are interchangeable with my wife's 2000 S40. My code reader no longer reads codes, which is obviously the place to start( beware of autel readers that you can't update).
The parts will be here tomorrow, I have ordered:
idle speed air control valve w/ gasket
coolant temperature sensor(fan runs after trying to start the car)
Thanks for staying with me guys.

I'll vote for defective ignition switch and bad fuel pressure regulator.
dumb question - you've checked the level of the coolant, right?
Also, can't remember, are you getting a check-engine light? If so, time to check the codes if you have not already done so.

The problem seemed to be the idle speed air control valve. It's located just in front of the Throttle housing and was a snap to change(two screws) and accessable with only removing the throttle cover. It may be the MAF played a role because I changed that out for a new unit, but I doubt it. The issue of the electric fan running was also taken care of. Thanks to you all. See you "next time".
All the best, Bill
