Default '02 S60 needs a little advice

2002 S60 with the following problems:
Ugly:
1. Need New Tires
2. Transmission is having that "slip problem" that is discussed by a lot of people. Dealer quoted $6,000 to replace the tranny
3. Brakes squeal like a pig.... Time to replace them too

Bad:
1. SRS Airbag light has been on for a while
2. Had the "time for regular service" light on for a few years now, reset it multiple times, comes back right away.

Good:
I don't have the money to throw at replacing everything at once. That also means that I don't have the money to throw at a new car either. I could cut my losses and by a "beater" for a little while, or I could try to replace one part at a time and hope that I don't get into any trouble.

What do you think?

Never go to a Stealership... Find a European shop or an independent Volvo shop and see your bill shrink down!

You can save some money by getting used tires. Many local places should only charge $25 each. The front two are most important.

As far as the brakes, same thing. Front pads and rotors are most important. The set I have on my front set me back about $85 for pads and rotors through ebay. They aren't great, but then again I don't have deep pockets either.

And for the transmission... Since you're on a shoestring budget, you might want to do a drain and fill for now. $6000 seems quite high. Doing that would be my last resort. (I just saw a 2001 T5 for sale for $5500. And it had new tires too.)

Default Thank you all for the response

I appreciate all the responses. It looks as if this may be the end of the road for my Volvo though. I am trying to find competitive quotes, but I just got in my car after a long weekend to find that the radiator resevoir was empty for the second time in 4 months. I have had the car for 4 years now, and it is approaching 90k miles. Things have been great, with the only major service being the front brake and rotor replacement almost 2 years ago.

Sure, the tranny was weird, but hey, it is just one of those things...

Loved the car, but it looks like there is a real risk that this will start to cost me dearly if I hang on. One thing then another type of events.
