04' S60 2.4 PS Rack Replacement
Good morning all,
So I'm posting this because I'd like some advice/guidance. My 2004 S60 has been leaking PS fluid from the steering shaft input for some time now (over a year). A mix of correct fluid and Lucas stop leak has helped me out, as I was trying to hold it off until getting rid of the car but I need some more time with this car and the issue is obviously getting worse (hotter weather = worse leak).
That being said, Mavis quoted me $1,300 said and done, which was okay to me. Once I got it there, they stated all the racks they were given had a different mounting point and they simply could not do it. A shop that quoted me $1,300 last year now stated I'm looking $2,800+. I'm reluctant to do this job myself having read a few posts stating how hard the job was, and have sent a message off to Volvo if they'd help considering (apparently) there's a revised part requiring new lines causing this extreme amount for a rack replacement.
Where should I go, and what should I do here?

These units are generally available and not that hard to install. I recommend lowering the rear subframe a bit to get clearance, but most of the heavy work can be done from the driver's side wheel opening.
A rebuilt unit should have the same hydraulic lines to connect but the only way to be sure is to take delivery of the new unit.
Another option is to send yours off to be rebuilt.

The only reason that I suggested the rebuild service is that you feared different connections. If you buy one already rebuilt, you have to do your best to cross reference the part numbers back to yours and look at the pictures closely.
The big difference appears to be whether or not the car is equipped with speed-sensitive steering. Often, an electrical connection at the rack is a giveaway of that feature but to be sure, check by physical inspection and also by VIN from your dealer.
