Hi, My friends 2001 s60 2.4 N/A manual recently developed a clunking and grinding noise from inside the tranny. We were driving and turned a corner slowly and heard a big bang from the front of the car. It still drove fine so that ruled out a CV axle blowing, so when we limped it home, I took the front drivers side wheel off and took the front end apart and took the axle out, both splines on the axle and inside the tranny look fine. So with both wheels off the ground we started it and slowly engaged the clutch and started off in first very slowly. The driver side axle was still out, I know that's not good to do but it was only for a few seconds. While it was moving I could tell it was coming from inside the housing, the spline inside would move but it sounds like there's a broken gear or bearing inside as it clunks and scrapes. The car still moves and shifts perfectly but the sound is pretty bad. I'm not a transmission guy so I'm not sure whats going on. Any thoughts?
