2001 S60: Difficult First Startup, but Starts Like a New Car Later
Greetings once again, Volvo Forums community!
First off, I would like to say, if you don't know already, I posted a thread on here over a year ago about our 1998 S70 having trouble running after starting up (that car is long gone, now ).
Anyways, my 2001 S60 (base), for the past week, struggles with its first startup of the day, but then starts like a new car (no exaggeration - I have to release the key very quickly) when I have to start it up again. Despite this, it runs fine afterwards. The ignition system also sounds normal. However, the service light stays on for only one minute, and I have zero service messages.
I would also like to point out that we've replaced the battery with a new one about four days ago, but I see no electronic issues. but I want to know what the issue may be. Could it be spark plugs, or something? I attempted to look up similar stories to no avail.
Thanks for reading.

Sorry for the late update, but here's what happened:
Sunday, I did exactly what you said, and it was doing the same thing; No changes occurred, but today (Tuesday), I waited for about 35-40 seconds, and the engine started slightly sooner than the usual first-startup.
Also, when I switch the ignition to II WITHOUT the engine running, the following hazard lights appear:
- Check Engine
- Service reminder
- Oil Pressure warning
The following hazard light appear WITH the engine running:
- Service reminder (120 seconds)
I feel the oil needs to be changed soon, but not urgently, since the oil light does not appear at all once the engine starts. However, I will attempt resetting the dash, and see what happens, as well as check everything else (trans fluid, brake fluid, etc). If the Oil Pressure light remains, I will do an oil change as soon as possible.
Thanks a bunch for your help!
UPDATE - I have successfully reset the Service reminder light, and it's gone. However, the Check Engine and Oil Pressure light remains with the engine off, and the ignition left on II, but they still disappear once the engine is started, and there are no messages.

It's normal for the oil pressure light to be on with the engine off and the key in the run (position 2) position. I suspect that it is normal for the check engine light as well.

UPDATE (07/18/2013):
I know my last post was exactly a month ago, but anyways, the reason behind the leak, starting difficulty, and gas fumes was due to a leaking fuel pump. The leak was probably caused by the fuel inside the fuel pump canister eroding the plastic at the top. Also, the fuel pump appeared as if it was either never replaced, or it was replaced once during the (roughly) 13 years of this car's operation. However, we replaced it with the proper fuel pump assembly yesterday morning, and all three of the issues mentioned were eliminated!
Thank you all for your assistance with this matter. My issue has been solved.
