Default 2004 S60 - Engine failure 62,000 miles

I purchased a used Volvo s60 model year 2004 with 11k miles. I have religiously taken the vehicle in for every service check up and just recently completed the $700 60k service first of Feb. The car was given back to us in great running shape and ready for another 15k per the next service visit. Much to my dismay at around 62k miles I started hearing a slight ticking noise coming from the engine compartment, it was not loud enough to complain about but it was noticeable. The noise got worse over the next week until I had no choice but to take it into the dealership for a check. The mechanic came out with the oil dip stick in his hand claiming the oil was low, seemed odd to me as the car was just in for a 60k service in which they replaced the engine oil. The next day the dealership called me saying the engine had a catostrophic failure and would need to be replaced cost $10k, by the way no check engine light came on during this time frame.

Of course I protested and claimed how could a vehicle that was properly serviced at the same dealership over the 3.5 years have such an engine failure. Dealership said they have never seen anything like this before. Was the service center negligant in not properly filling the oil to the proper level during the 60k service or is there an issue with the 2004 S60 engine. Has anyone else experienced this engine failure before on their S60 year 2004?

I own a 2004 S60, which just turned 70K. I bought mine certified, which means that it was always serviced by the dealership per schedule, and sold to me dealership guaranteed, along with a Volvo certified comprehensive extended warranty, until 100,000 miles, which Volvo claims is like bumper to bumper minus wear and tear (was purchased by original owner and carried over to me when I purchased the car), and have not had any complains. The car is absolutly imaculate, mint, etc. Infact, it still smells like new!

To be honest with you, and I should probably not be saying this, but I can't wait until something breaks to see if the warranty is what they claim it is. Any ways, There's nothing wrong with my 70k miles engine. I would go back to the dealership where you had your vehicle serviced, and have them print out exactly what they did to the car last time it was in for service, and go from there. Also I would go to another Volvo dealership and have them diagnose the car to see if the other place is trying to rip you off. I don't know if there's another one close by where you live. I live in South Florida (Palm Beach), and within 1 hour's drive I have 6 Volvo dealerships, from here to Miami.

Also, it is kind of odd that a ticking noise coming from the engine is going to cost $10,000. Heck, worst case scenario, if you need a replacement engine, you can usually find one w/ turbo, on ebay for less than $1000!!!, what are they charging you for???!!!

Don't forget about lemon laws, which are on your side.

Hope I was of any service to you, and best of luck

You sound like too nice a guy. But I doubt you will allow them to take advanatage of you.

Volvo engines are not new designs, they are essentially bullet proof we say around here.

There are so many questions: why does it need a completely new engine? what was the ticking involved? Why was there oil starvation with a fairly fresh oil change. Did the engine consume oil before?

Then there are the common sense things to occur... you have to contact the dealership manager immediately and request a meeting. You have to ask to meet with the Volvo Dealer Service Representative and schedule and appointment with him.

They you ask them what they can do for you to accomodate you. You did all the right things. That engine shouldn't blow at 60K.

Something is wrong and I fully suspect that you may have been screwed by a $8 per hour tech trainee regarding the finer points of doing an oil change correctly. I have seen it on other forums where they mess up the simpliest of things like actually putting oil back in.

when was the 60k done??? 4.5k is kind of out of limitations on liability from the dealership/ however pick up seals in the oil pan do go out, was there any kind of low oil pressure indication???

Not to be smart, but don't you ever check your fluid levels periodically at the pumps when you fill up?. People do make mistakes and Ialways re-check my oil level the day after it has been changed..."just in case", to make sure it was properly filled. Best time is first thing in morning on level ground before you start car.

Volvo's are amazing works of art, they will last you 1 million miles then they will last 1 million more!
I have a few friends who have been driving their Volvo as their fist car since they were young teens and a few family members who have been doing the same and are now giving the cars to their grand children!

the problem is not the car or the engine, the problem is bringing the car into the dealership and having some punk teen change your oil when he doesn't know how to screw in a light bulb. they killed your car

before you buy a car learn how to properly maintain it yourself.
