Default 2008 S60 very hard to start when cold.

My wife's S60 has been quite reliable, but now takes quite a long time or won't start when cold. If it's in the 40's it's fine, but when it's in the 20's or colder it's problematic.

We replaced the battery and had a tune-up. We drove it home from the mechanic and it was fine, but then it turned cold again and now the same thing.

Our mechanic is usually pretty good, but he says he can't find anything. Any ideas?

A little more info. The car has 95k miles and the instant it starts it runs like there was never a problem. No issues with stuttering or irregular idling. Nothing.

What are the specs on the new battery? Will "jumping" the car help it start easier?

It's OEM spec and thanks for replying.

It's fixed!

Since it might help someone else some day I thought I'd post the solution. It turned out to be a crankshaft position sensor which acted up when cold. Had it replaced and she's good as new!

Default S60 won’t start in cold

I had the problem with our S 60 not starting if it was colder than 32°. It would crank and crank and occasionally the rpm needle would jump up but come right back down. As soon as it got warmer it will start right up. Did some research and saw other people had issues with the crank shaft sensor so I replaced that. About $70 part. Very easy to swap it out and it solved the problem But I created another one in the process. When I went to tighten the 10 mm bolt I tightened it too tight and the bracket that holds the sensor snapped. It’s a plastic bracket against a very hot engine so it gets very brittle. Be very careful when cranking down on that 10 mm bolt because getting that bracket out was a two hour job and the worst replacement I’ve ever had to do. It’s a Stupid design. Just get it to be snug and don’t force it or you will hate yourself. 😃
