I disconnected it before pulling the starter. Checking this cable to the battery ground reads high resistance. I'm sending this vehicle on to the dealer as I don't want to short something more significant. Especially not knowing what was done at the oil change place.

Thought maybe they ran a screw into a cable when they reinstalled the belly pan. Now I'm thinking something major is wrong with the motor. Tested the old starter with a spare battery and it runs but very roughly.
Getting it to the dealer is a smart move. I replaced starters before and if you're experiencing a smoking starter at ignition that could be signs that something mechanical inside the engine is under high resistance (or even locked up) and causing the starter motor to overheat under stress. Smoke is the tell-tale sign.

It's hard not to wonder if they forgot to fill with oil, started it and let it run until it locked up. Not trying to place blame, but the shop is highly suspect especially when they wanted $1300 to replace a cheap starter and.. the original starter looked like some tech went medieval on it.

This is proof why you want to choose your shops wisely. This shop may be trying to shift the blame for their mistake.

Actually, it gets hot and smokes after turning the engine over a couple revolutions. The electronic oil level monitoring system indicates a max level and that it is "ok". I just cannot spend more time as it has become beyond my capabilities. I will certainly report what the dealership finds.

Update: It is still at the dealership. They replaced the battery, starter and positive cable/fusible link. Upon startup attempt, it started smoking. Not sure if it actually started running but now they're saying it needs fuel injectors. They also said it was almost empty of oil which is kinda curious as I checked it via the electronic smart display. Glad I aborted and sent if off to the dealership but sad for my friend who is now dealing with the original shop and the dealership.

Very interesting/ unfortunate indeed. Sorry for what your friend has to deal with but appreciate the update. I can't imagine how so much can go bad during an oil change.

My friend got his Volvo back yesterday. The dealership said there was oil in the combustion chambers! How in the world can that be accomplished.

I bet they overfilled the crap out of it and tried to start it. Shame on this place.

This is also why I HATE electronic oil level sensors.
