Default ABS Module Swap - what is the truth?

2004 S60; my ABS control module is bad.

I have seen listings for rebuilt units which you need a software load. Okay, no software loaded means it will not work. The dealership parts guy told me a new one needs a software load.

What about a used one from a wreck? It has the software loaded, but it is not clear if it needs a programming update. Which one of the two alternatives is correct?

1) No, it does not need a dealer update and can "learn" or synch to your vehicle with a drive (of about 20 miles continuous)...a dealer computer session can do this much faster.

OR
2) Yes, it must have a dealer computer session since it will not work without your vehicle computer serial numbers loaded.

Thanks in advance for the clarity.

I have not gotten any clarity yet, but I did get another alternative.

3) No, a used unit will not work. Once a unit is mated to a vehicle, it cannot be used in another vehicle.

Today I received and installed a Brake Control Module (BCM) from a 2005 S60. Same part number 8671224, but with two other markings on the case different indicating some type of manufacturing change.

After installing it, I plugged in the computer and had several BCM communication and other error messages which I could not clear.

Tomorrow I will drive it to see if it aligns to the vehicle. If not, then I will schedule a visit to the dealership or shop for a software load/synch.

it can be 1 or 2 depending on what is donor car.
For 1 you need the same: MY + Transmision (including 2 or 4 WD)+ ABS type (STC DSTC TRACS).

the other cases need 2.

And the answer is....(drum role) #2, or a variant thereof.

I drove around last night for about 30 miles. Still no communication with the wreck unit. The odometer did not advance and the trip meter did not work.

Called the dealer for a SW load, bad attitude, it was clear they did not want to do it unless they sold you a new unit. So, I called around and found an independent shop with the computer. They had a slot open this afternoon. Works fine, $70 less than dealer, and a positive attitude.

2005 S60 BCM installed in a 2004 S60. Same part number. Works fine after software reload.

Oh, I forgot to include it earlier. A big thumbs up to the folks at ProgRama (ProgRama Remanufactured Electronic Control Modules 2-3 YEAR warranty ). I called after ordering the wreck unit and they were very straight forward in the good wreck unit working with a SW load. If I need a rebuild or to buy a remanufactured unit, they will be the first folks I call.

Default SALVAGE Abs Controller P2 2001

Today got it for free and I just put it in the car 2001 s60 2.4 no turbo, got it with matching numbers one year later than mine, no dice or what needed. It works like a charm.
