Default Alternator removal question

Hello everyone. I'm new to Volvo, but not new to cars/repairs etc. I have an issue I have to take care of ASAP. I just purchased my first Volvo, an extremely clean pampered 2001 S60 2.4t. 58 miles into the hundred mile trip home, the alternator blew. I've been combing the internet for info/tips etc, have seen several videos on the replacement procedure on different models, but the one thing that sticks out to me is the fact that nobody removes the box containing a couple ECU's that's in front of the power steering/alternator. Why is this? It would provide much more room to get the job done. Also, my ECU box has what looks to be an air hose inlet on the front, but I've got no hose, should there be one?
Appreciate any/all insight.

Brad.
