Default AWD not working

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site and I have an issue with my 2005 Volvo s60 2.5T AWD, with 95,xxx miles on the clock. Lately I've noticed the car does HORRIBLE in the snow (we live in the northeastern part of the U.S.) and I can't even get up the driveway even if I push the "W" button near the gear shifter. All that is happening is the front wheels are spinning and the traction light on the dash is going crazy. I had someone stand outside of the car when I try to get up the driveway and they said the rear wheels were not doing anything whiless the front ones are spinning non stop. This leads me to believe that something is wrong with the AWD system. There are no check engine or check AWD system lights or messages (the only message is the alarm system service which we are disregarding) and we have yet to pull any codes using an obd scanner. Is this a common problem? Also if anyone has had this happen to them, is it something that has to be done at a dealer, or can I do it myself? Thanks in advance!!
