Default bushing/control arm repairs

Hi,

My mechanic recently told me that I needed to change the control arm bushings. apparently its a common problem on the s60. Happened to be at a dealer the other day and he told me that its in the range of $900 to change because its labor intensive to press in and out. And he showed me that my tires are a little worn on the inside... Here's what I want to know:

- What exactly do the bushings do? Is it a safety issue, like its going to fall apart and the wheels gonna crash down or what? Or is it just a noise/tire wear issue that I can just live with?

- If I buy the control arm with the bushing installed from IPD, does that eliminate the need to do the "pressing" and thus come out much cheaper?

Thanks.

The bushings are sort of like rubber cushioned pivot points for the control arms. The tire wear and possibly suspension noises will get worse as the bushings get worse.

I haven't had to do this repair yet, but from looking at the suspension setup, it would seem there would be a lot less labor by just replacing the whole arm. You may want to check an independent mechanic and see if you can find a better price. You'll probably want do an alignment after this repair...
