Check Enginge - P0455 code
Hey all,
So I took my 2001 Volvo s60 to an independent shop to have the axels, lower control arm bushings and ball joint replaced. Car worked fine. 3 days after the check engine light pops on....I run to autozone to have the code pulled and its the emissions evap gross leak code. He says its not a huge problem and nothing that will have me stuck on the road but take it back to the shop because they probably knocked something loose.
I take it to the shop and they want to do a smoke test. I say no, because my car was fine before they had it. He then says lets change the gas cap but that's more than likely thats NOT the issue. They give me a new gas cap and send me on my way. They even told me its nothing to worry about, I would just fail the emissions test. I drive halfway home and in the message center it displays for me to tighten the gas cap. Go figure.
Three days later the check engine light is now on!!! My question is do I want to do the smoke test or try to check the common issues (J-Hose, the canister thing, ETC)??? I feel like I'm smelling faint whiffs of gas.
How bad is it for me to drive on it like this?

Unless they smashed or cut the evap line running along the passenger side of the subframe or disconnected it and didn't reconnect it, they are not at fault.
A smoke test is to find leaks in the evap system hoses. You can visually check the hoses at the canister and if you see a crack, replace it.
It could also need a software upgrade from Volvo, which is covered by an extended warranty on some models. Post your VIN and I can see if it applies to yours.

I FINALLY got the problem looked at. It was a hole in the evap hose. The mechanic claimed he'd never seen anything like that before. I got the problem fixed but the check engine light has popped back on. When they tried to check the code it was throwing this time they ended up getting an error message instead and the engine light went away. Weird.
