Hi

I just got this car and I'm getting a sound from the rear of the car that is intermittant but it sounds like marbles clicking - any idea what this might be ?

Is it under deceleration or acceleration only? I had this problem with an audi once turned out to be that the gears were so worn out that there was play in them...

 

The car only has 40K miles on it. So it's not very old and used. It sounds like it is coming from the muffler, but I don't think it is. It is still under warrantee, but I brought it to the Volvo Dealership and the mechanic said he didn't hear anything. Because the sound goes off and on. Sometimes doesn't make sound, sometimes it does. I just want to make sure its not a big problem so it ends up costing me millions to fix down the road. Any comments? Thanks

 

Could it be more like a rattle? The sway bar end links fail pretty frequently (front or rear - both) and cause a rattle that can intesify as you go over small road irregularities. Your description may be pretty valid in this case..

Sounds just like if you had a couple of marbles in your hand and were rolling them against each other - the sound was happening while the car was in park and not moving - while it was happening it did seem to happen when I put car in gear - but again this is an intermeiitant thing and last nite it was occurring while i was parked and car was running

 

also the sound seemed to be coming from the end of the muffler or axle area

If you are really concerned about it, you could request that the volvo technician drive the car for a day or two to see if they could locate the car. We sometimes drive customer vehicles home for weird/intermittant problems that we can't verify within a standard diagnosis.
