Default Dipped Beam Failure

Hello Everyone,

My 2002 S60's right low beam is out. The information panel reads "Dipped Beam Failure".

I have checked the bulb and it is ok (Swapped with bulb on left side and connected it to a power supply)

I have checked the Right Low Beam fuse in the dash fuse box.

I am wondering if Volvo is running this circuit through a relay that has failed?

Any suggestions will be helpful

Thanks.....

Under the dash on the drivers side there is a relay box called a Central electronic module (CEM).There is a relay in there for each headlight.Sometimes the relays get hot and start to melt the plastic and then lose connection.Check that out and let me know.

Hi Tech,

Well that was helpful. There is a relay box but how do you get it out?? This panel is in the dash vertically with a bolt at the top. I have loosened it as far out as I could get it and it does not allow the panel to drop down out of the dash.

Once I get this panel out where is the map for it?? There looks to be about 10 or 12 relays on it without any written indication as to what they belong to.

Thanks for the help,

Stephen

There really isn't a map for it.To get the panel down reach up top and feel for a metal tab.You will have to lift up on the tab and push the relay box towards the passenger side. Then tilt some and then pull up and it should release.Once you get it down inspect carefully and see if there is any plastic melted. You can also pull the relays out one at a time.Just make sure when you do it the key is off.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to follow up on this thread. The headlight relay was bad. Although it was not melted or discolored in anyway it would not pick. I bought from Volvo one of each of the kind of relays I saw in the car to use in testing. After a few swaps I found the one that did not work.

I think I will get one of the electrical manuals from www.volvotechinfo.com will greatly increase the troubleshooting on this car to have diagrams.

Thanks for the help,

Stephen
