Default Evaporator Core Replacement Instructions

Hello all!

The a/c evaporator core for my 2015.5 V60 is leaking and needs to be replaced. I've gotten several quotes, all around $1,500 from independent shops. The Volvo dealership quoted $2,700.

The first three independent shops I've been to have declined the work after discovering there are no instructions in any of their databases (AllData, etc.). It shows up in their quoting software, but not in the actual procedures software.

Thoughts? I really don't want to have to take it to the dealership and get charged exorbitant pricing.

Thank you for your help! I've never heard of a repair procedure not being in the mechanical and collision repair databases.

Not sure about a 2015 model year but I had this done on an 850 and as I recall, it took about 10 hours of shop time disassemble the dash to access the evaporator then reassemble, charge the system etc. What did the Volvo dealer quote for labor time? Keep in mind the dealers will use VIDA so they have the full set of instructions - so I'd doubt an indy could do it for less hours. The $2700 quote seems about right to me as this is one of the more labor intensive repair jobs for a car.

Here's the info in Vida 2014d for a 2015A V60. Does not look too bad - as in you don't have to remove the climate box to get to it as you do in many other cars. Google the part number - looks like you cut the old pipes and the new the pipes unbolt from both ends of the new evaporator and it comes with a replacement door for the one you cut in the climate box!

Update for the benefit of the group. The evaporator core was leaking. I tried several indy shops in town, and their systems all had labor for the job but none of them had the instructions. Finally Christian Brothers at least went the extra mile to FIND the instructions, and did the work. As @hoonk alluded to, the part is not designed to be replaced. They had to cut it out of the car, and then cut it out of the climate box. The replacement part comes with a screw-on "patch" panel to close up the box. ~$2,100.
