Default Front suspension issues.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and looking forward to gain some Volvo wisdom fromthe forum.

This winter my 2001 S60 started to make some loud weird "dry" noisesin the upper part of the front suspension (just on the right side and when it is cold). I took it to a Volvo repair shop and they replaced a few lower suspension components (like the steering limiter, or whatever is called) but the noise did not go away... it got worse.

In order to troubleshoot the noise (they cannot tell for sure what is making the noise) they lubricated the lower control arm and the bushings. So now, I not only have the "weird dry" noise but a whole bunch of new "clacking"noises sounding like the entire front suspension is ready to fall apart. I believe the new noises come from old bushings that when dry worked OK, but now that they are lubricated have started to complain.

The repair shop now wants to change the upper tower strut (where I think the noise comes from) andthe entire lower control arm assembly. I'm thinking on cashing out my 401K in order topay for the repair cost.

Does anyone had a similar experience? What do you guys recommend?
Can I just replace the bushings and leave the old control arms?
Should I just crank up the stereo until the weather gets warmer and dryer... as it is supposed to be in California anyway.

Thanks for your help.

Stabilizer bar link ends (guaranteed worn), upper strut mounts, lower control arm bushings and ball joints. If you replace these parts in this order or all at once you will eliminatethe noise. Most of these parts are only good for less than 60K.

You can check the upper spring seat your self if you have minor hand tools.
The top strut nut is a 13/16 or 21MM adjustable wrench will also work.
Try turning the nut if it turns easy it is bad. If it feels rubbery it is good.

I can't believe you took it to a Volvo shop and they didn't know how to find the noise must be a crappy shop.
You might want to find another one.

Greatinputs.
I took my S60to a better shop this time and had a "smarter" discussion with them.We quickly found out that he upper strut mounts were bad.
They said it is pretty common problem in the S60's.
I have it schedule for repairs next week. I will very likely end up replacing the entire strut plus the shocks, they have 85K miles... it is about time.
We'll see how it goes.
