Default how can I mess up a fuel door hinge install??

The IPD video told me to snap off the plastic pins on the outer side of the hinge then knock the river it with a punch. Should the punch be larger than the diameter of the pin? I made a hash of it and had to order a new one. Any tips on this seemingly simple job appreciated

1- Install the hinge on the fuel door.
2- Position it on the car. Use a hammer to secure it with the top and bottom plastic pins.
3- Remove the middle pins with needle nose pliers
4- Use a pick to make the holes for the middle pins just slightly bigger.
5- Put the middle pins back in the holes and push them in fully

At the risk of being a dope, explain step 2. Just tap them with a drift?
