Default intermittent start problem with 2004 S60 2.5T

I purchased my 2004 S60 2.5T about 2 years ago. Currently has 134K miles on it. Within the last year, I had to have it towed to the dealer three times since it left me stranded in various places. It would crank but wouldn't turn over. I would usually get a check engine light along with a message such as ABS service required. Sometime a transmission service message would be displayed as well. On one occassion when the car arrived at the dealer it started no problem. Other times the dealer usually just "cleared" the codes ($100+) and the car would start. The dealer told me that I should probably think about replacing the electronic control module since it seems like there is a communications issue with the computer. To do the job will cost between $900 - $1,000.

Has anyone else had similar issue? If so, how was the problem corrected?
