Default Limped home, now wont start.

2001 S60 T5, manual trans, 117k

I have a tow truck scheduled to come here in an hour to haul my dead Volvo to the dealer.

The car has 117k and ran very well until two nights ago. I bought it in Atlanta with 116k and drove it home without a single issue.

One night it started to buck and jerk, then it started misfiring very badly, and then I lost brake assist. I was able to very carefully get the car home 5 miles from where where I was at. I tried starting the vehicle a couple days later and now it sputters out seconds after turning over. Electrical system and accessories seem okay.

I did NOT get a check engine light, to my surprise.

The DTE readout shows 80 miles to empty, so there is sufficient fuel.

Is this an ETM failure?

I also have a DSTC service warning, but I suspect that's just the ABS module in need of repair.

Thanks everyone for your help.

sound like to me that you might be having an issue with your coil pack...this is one of the symptoms affiliated with a coil pack going back or some type of short take the car to your local mineike dealer they will diagnose the car for free and see if this is your problem....check it out b4 you start spending a lot money trying to fix the problem only to find out that this may in fact be your issue!!! keep us posted of your results!

Today Volvo replaced my ETM -and- my fuel pump, both recalled parts. All I paid for was the tow ($33, the rest covered by Sprint Roadside Assist).

I'm impressed with Volvo doing this for a car thats almost a decade old with over 100,000 miles.

He said it would be done by the end of today but I wont be picking it up until tomorrow, so we'll see. I also asked the service writer to also take care of the front wheel rubbing problem.

I could see a bad fuel pump doing that. I didn't realize that was a recall. Is it only 2001? Or does that apply to the 02's as well?

So you just bought the car? Do you know when/if the timing belt was replaced yet? I hope for your sake it was already done at the scheduled interval.

Not a clue when/if it was done. They said they'd look for indicators that it was done, but with the car hitting the used market at 116k, its possible the previous owner traded it in just after it was due at 105k.

I do have the last owner's name and address (its a one-owner car), so I might try to find a phone number and find out for sure.

I thought I'd get used to the heavy shifter, but so far I haven't.

Hopefully for your sake it has already been done. Otherwise theres $800 if you have Volvo do it as they will replace your water pump and serpetine belt (although they call it something different) and flush the coolant at the same time.

Picked up the car today.

I had them check the timing belt --they said it looked fine, no cracks. The last owner's contact info/insurance card was sitting on the driver seat when I picked up the car, so I assume they tried to contact her.

They also adjusted the bump stops to prevent wheel rubbing. $0 out the door. Great service from Brentwood Volvo.

That's good. If there are no cracks or anything at 117k miles it was most likely replaced. It would be in pretty bad shape right now if it was the original belt.
