I'd say go for a '04+. Do not, for any reason, buy a 2001-2003. That is just my opinion of course, but seems to be the consensus among 01-03 owners.

-'01 owner

Default ? 01-03

Whats so bad about 01-03 S60's? My check engine light came on, dealer and a Volvo service outfit told me I needed a new catalytic converter. Someone on this site said I needed injectors. I changed the fuel filter and ran 2 cans of BG44k, one of Chevron's injector cleaner through 3 tanks of gas and the problem is gone. I bought it with 91k on it, up to 99k now. So my biggest issue was the previous owner didn't keep the injectors clean. Other than that it runs very well. When I took it in to dealer to get the daytime driving lights turned off($50) they gave me the complete history of the vehicle, as it had only one owner and he did all his maintenance through them.
I think the best thing to do is buy a vehicle that has been taken care of, maintain it well yourself and problems will be minimal. I did searches on S60's before I bought and they were well recommended.
Are there other issue's I need to be aware of?

Oh yes... ETM failure (which I am victim of) and a horrible transmission that is a ticking time bomb.

Friends don't let friends buy 01-03 S60's...
