mercury switch???
I have an '02 AWD S60. Every so often, when I hit an abnormally large bumb in the road, the dome lights will flick on for a split second and then dim off again. Most recently, I noticed this along with the red exclamation warning indicator in the dash flicked on for a second as well. Both came on and went off at the exact same time, and were only on for a split second.
At first I thought it was a mercury switch in the trunk lid that would turn on the dome lights when opened, but that does not seem to be the case because when I try lifting the trunk with the car running, the interior dome lights don't come on, just the trunk lights. Is there a mercury switch in the car somewhere that would cause the dome lights to come on? Is there a short somewhere that when jostled around turns the lights on?
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

RE: mercury switch???
The door lock assembly controls the lights.
It isn't like the old cars with the switch in the door jam. On these cars the switch is internal in the lock assembly.
Hopefully one time the message will tell you which door. Other than that it is hard to tell you will have to wait till it messes up more.

RE: mercury switch???
OK Tech,
Since the original post, the problem has become more frequent, and more persistant. The message center says that it is the passenger door that is open. I have an appointment scheduled to have the repair done. Is this repair something that will be covered under the certified used vehicle 100,000 mile warranty? Also, how long should the repair take?
Thanks again,
Adam

RE: mercury switch???
Back again... I took it to the dealer today, and they're giving me the poker face telling me they may have to trace through the wiring harness to solve the problem and will then have to call the warranty company to see if the problem is covered. If this isn't covered under warranty, it will be the second thing (first was when my gas door just fell off when I opened it) that they didn't cover. Do you have a part number of the sensor / module inside the door that is the probable cause of this problem? If it's not under warranty, and depending on the cost, I may buy the part and fix it myself. Thanks again Tech!
PS. I hope they don't void the warranty because I have subs and an amp in the trunk. I didn't think about that until after I left. They are not connected to the vehicle wiring except for (2) leads off of each rear speaker for the amp signal, and power directly from the battery in the trunk.

RE: mercury switch???
front passenger door is the problem.
On a side not, and most definately part of the same problem; lately, when I lock the car with the remote, sometimes the front passengar door will unlock itself immediately and I have to re-lock the car several times before the front door will stay locked.
