Default Monroe rear shock fitment /broken rear spring

Hi,

I've got an '01 s60, base engine, not electronic suspension. I got two monroe 39040 oem - level shocks to put in. But they seem to be quite different than the original shocks. The length of the bottom mounting tube seems correct, but the top cap is about 2.5" in diameter with a flat top, whereas the top factory shock mounts are about 1.5" and cone-shaped. The monroes are not going to nestle into the mounts. The vertical forces are going to be distributed out to the edge of the shock cap, which is only relatively thin metal plate. I'm concerned that this is not at all satisfactory.

I bought the shocks at rockauto, and they list no corresponding mounting plates, so I thought I was ok. I haven't seen them elsewhere either. This is my first attempt at this kind of repair, but this looks fishy to me.

Also, I have to replace a broken rear spring, so any advise would be welcome on that front as well. Thanks.

Our site sponser FCP Groton has everything you would and will ever need for your car, here is the page that you would have had front and rear Volvo S80 S60 V70 Struts Shocks Mounts Spring Seats Kit with 10% off and free shipping, these guys will make sure you get the parts that fit....Rock Auto is good but FCP IS BETTER!! do you research on FCP and see what they recommend then maybe you can order what you need from them or Rock Auto....sorry I can't help more but I won't use anyone else but FCP when it comes to part for my 03 s60, I hope this helps?

Thanks. It does help, and I'll keep it in mind. I've decided that the spring job is too much for me, so I'm going to have the rear end done.
Thanks again.

try and find a shop that specialize in foreign cars, they have all the equiptment and won't kill you price wise and they don't nickle and dime you say this, that and the other needs replacing they only fix what you want done unless you say otherwise! good luck!!

Thanks again. This help spur me to get another opinion. I went to a shop I was happy with before, and though they don't specialize in foreign cars they are good and they worked with me. The Monroes had a collar I was unaware of that adapted them to the crowned volvo shock mounts. So all is well and I save a nice sum of money. Hope the Monroes last. The used spring worked out well too. I will keep Groton in mind for next time.

Be well.
