I have had an intermittent fault with the engine over heating - the electric fan is not cutting in and out all the time suspected sender or maybe a common Volvo fault??? This has happened twice - has anyone else had this problem?

Have your car checked for the cooling fan recall and see if it is within specs for the recall.
