I have a 2002 volvo s60 with the sport suspension. Recently when going over a bump, there is a hard clunk that comes from the drivers side of the car. When I investigated,I found that where the top of the strut is mounted to the car is elivated a little. I do not know what it is called but it is the black rubber circle. I looked inside and it seems that there is a metal bar (im assuming part of the strut) with what looks like torn rubber around it. Does this seem like the strut is bad or something else like the bushings?

 

Sounds like your upper spring seat broke.
