New Owner 2004 S60 I5 EFI - Back End Noise
Hey All - New owner with 140,000 miles. Good mechanical shape. No accident issues. Did require and replaced "wear & tear" issues with new:
1) Top engine mount 2) Catalytic convertor 3) Left front ABS ring and axle 4) New alternator
(2, 3 & 4 were engine/dash warning light issues which are cleared now)
When driving over bumpy sections of road there is clunking noise from trunk - almost like a pick up truck with stuff in the back. I have read about some rear sway bar/bushing issues, but initial mechanic review determined these were good. I am going to cushion the spare tire and make sure it and the jack, etc are tied down good.
There is some debris from the Cat convertor when it went bad apparently blown into the muffler that can hear when we shake it. But I don't believe that is the issue - nor do I want to replace that as the muffler looks to be likely replaced by previous owner and in good shape
Is this noisy, clunky sound from back end a common road noise in this model? Having another mechanic look at the rear assembly again just to be sure.
Thanks!

My 2005 plagued me for three years
I replaced all kinds of rear end and trunk hinge parts with no luck. While driving down the road with my daughters in the back seat I had a thought. I had them push up on the window when we hit a bumpy part of the road. Noise disappeared! The window had become separated at the lower edge. Window shop said it would be tricky to remove and reseal so couldn't guarantee it wouldn't break. After another year, the window finally succumbed to the banging and shattered. Insurance paid for a new one. Problem solved.
