Resounding Noise Over Bumps 2006 S60 AWD
Just Purchased an 06 S60 AWD Turbo 2,000 Miles Hearing a resounding , Thumping noise over sharp bumps mostly at slower speeds.
1) Checked the trunk for any loose items, Spare etc......., did not find anything
2) Checked tire pressure 32 Front 30 Rear, seeems pretty normal
3) Does not appear to be a muffler noise everything seems fine there to.
Has anyone had this type of problem??????????, Is there a problem???????????Maybe Maybe not,
But I l;ooked around and no one appears to be having any of these type of low level thumping noise that i can see any help would be
greatly appreciated, Thanks Brian G.

RE: Resounding Noise Over Bumps 2006 S60 AWD
I have the same problem with my 2006 S60 AWD (6,000 miles) since it was new. It seems to be coming from the right rear, so I checked everything in the truck (jack, spare, wiring, floor and side panels). I couldn't isolate the source.
I had the car back to the dealer. They assigned a mechanic to ride with me, and he clearly heard the noise. He diagnosed it as sway bar links (which apparently is a weakness with S60's), and supposedly replaced them. I asked if they road tested the car afterwards, and was told "yes, all is now right". I drove it all of five miles before I noticed it again.
It seems to be coming from the right rear strut tower. I will be going back to the dealer to have them check the seats at the top of the struts (another known problem area with the S60), and I will post if this solves the problem.
This is my second Volvo. I had to have sway bar links replaced on my V70. These are not isolated or "new" problems judging from comments here. There is no excuse for a brand new car to have suspension issues. If I cannot get this resolved, I doubt that I will buy another Volvo, which is a shame, because otherwise this is a good car.

RE: Resounding Noise Over Bumps 2006 S60 AWD
Any updates on this dondiegom?
What are the culprit parts for causing rumbling noise coming from the rear when going over multiple bumps at a slow speed?
Do the rear shocks also have seats or rubber mountings that go bad, as they seem to do for the struts? Is it a costly repair?
questions....questions....questions!
Cheers,

I had the rear sway bar links replaced. No difference.
Returned to dealer. Had a service technician ride with me. He put the rear seats down, and actually crawled partly into trunk. He confirmed that the noise was coming from the right rear strut tower. Bad shock he said.
Arranged to get shock replaced. Part was not in as promised. On critical backorder, but Volve's parts center in Sweden closes for the week between Christmas and News Years! Parts finally came, and had the shock and the strut seat replaced. Still have the noise.
I am going to keep on top of the dealer. So far they are working with me.
Time for another drive with the service guy in the trunk!

It could have to do with the resonator coming into contact with the driveline....this is a common flaw in the R line, and is also known as the rain squeal. Fix is take it to your friendly muffler shop and have the resonator taken off. It gives the car a better sound as well can increase performance on certain applications.
