Odd Rear End Noise
Hello fellow Volvoers,
Have a quick question to ask and wanted to see if any others have had similar problems. I own a 2002 S60 2.4t which began making an odd rear end noise late last year and occurs at all speeds when the car rolls across bumps and slight road dips. It did not make the noise when I first bought the car in August, but it randomly started one day with no definitive underlying cause. The sound comes from the right wheel well/suspension area. The noise sounds exactly like a golf ball is being rolled around in a plastic pail. My car was inspected in February, and the mechanics did a tire balance and alignment so I figure if they saw something structurally wrong they would tell me. I emptied out my trunk as well just to make sure nothing was bouncing around but found nothing. This noise doesn't affect the quality of the ride; it just does it so much it will drive you insane.
Any suggestions (other than turn the radio up :P) would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same exact noise, seems to be coming from just the rear left. I suspect that due to the symptoms that it's either a failed shock and/or suspension bushing. So the golf ball in a pail is actually a little play in your suspension. I haven't confirmed the source of the problem, but that's my take on it.
