You'll find many different opinions about change intervals on these forums, but two things remain consistent: Use full synthetic oil and don't rely on Volvo's 7.5K mile interval.
Personally I change my oil every 5k miles or six months (whichever comes first) with a full synthetic oil and always replace the filter with one from an OEM brand.

Me too. Cheap insurance, I figure. Sort of like not believing that Volvo transmissions never need fluid replacement under "normal" driving or that the coolant lasts forever. Fluids are way cheaper than mechanical parts replacement. So are filters. As the old Nike ad used to say: just do it.

It takes 5.8 but you really want top use 5.5 The PVC system in a S60 will pull Oil if its over filled and when Oil get Hot it expands so i always use 5.5 quarts. One more thing when you use Syn oil and haven't in the past do get upset if you get an Oil leak or notice the Oil in low.Syn when it gets Hot gets very thin and will find space between the seals while Reg oil runs much thicker and will flow heaver. This is why high mileage Oil is really just 50/50 to help with week seals so you don't get any leaks. Also make sure you check the Oil weight i use 10-w30 in the summer but in the winter i use 5-w20 becasue the oil runs heaver in the cold New England winters. Not sure what year your cars is but used whats recommended

I will keep my eye out for the leaks. I have been going by the reading on the dipstick( anyone actually got an accurate reading on one?).
The other issue that has me concerned is when I changed the filter and had to insert the new one. There is a protruding cylinder or whatever it is that looks like it is supposed to prod through the filter akin to an the way a wheel slides onto an axle. The center hole on the filter was not large enough in diameter to fit so I kinda just forced it on.,,, uh?

It's right. I've had to do that as well...some go on easy and some you have to force. I change my oil with Castrol Edge 5W30 and go by the 7.5k oil change light. Last oil change I sent a sample to Blackstone Labs for a UOA. Everything looked great and the TBN was 2.6...Blackstone said I could have gone to 9-10k without a problem. A TBN of 1.0 is low. I know they advertise the Edge as a 15,000 oil, but turbo's eat oil...so with the turbo it won't go that long.
