Default ? Parking Brake ?

Last night I had my car towed to the local dealer, here's what happened:
Less than a mile from work in icy, slushy conditions, I drove over a somewhat jarring manhole cover in the road and heard an extremely loud thump followed by grinding noise from the rear left tire. I thought I'd blown a tire and pulled over a few hundred feet further up the road. When I pulled the parking brake handle I got no resistance and the handle flops back to the down position. I walked around and inspected all four tires, finding nothing wrong. I tried to reposition the car further from the main road unsuccessfully - when I tried to back up, the rear left tire locked up. Even when the car was elevated on the flatbed I couldn't readily see anything wrong (of course, it was getting pretty dark by then, too). I'm sure this is something to do with the parking brake, just seeing if maybe someone is familiar with the system and can help me keep the dealer from ripping me off any more than necessary. Thanks so much!

I wonder if the E-brake shoe(Material part) seperated and locked the wheel.

Oh yeah - that and more... The dealer finally called me back at 3 this afternoon and it wasn't good news... Apparently when I hit that bump in the road the lining separated, it then proceeded to chew up everything in its path. I now have to replace the left side Spindle, Rotor, Parking Brake Shoes (both sides), Cable and all associated fasteners and gaskets - to the tune of just over $1500. (The parts need to be ordered so I'm also without a vehicle for the forseeable future.) They haven't yet mentioned the alignment that I'll be in store for according to the Swedespeed forum. And no, Volvo will not cover any of this under warranty, nor will the extended warranty I purchased with the car less than a year and a half ago. I can afford the monthly payments on my loan, but I'm beginning to wonder if I can afford this car with all the maintenance expenses I've run into! I really love my car...

Sorry that it happened. It is not common for the S60 that I know of. I only know if it happening to the 960 only.

It also sucks that Volvo will not help at all.

Just my thoughts, it appears you were involved in an accident. If the manhole cover was notin the proper position you may have a claim with the municipality. They do sometimes get dislodged during plowing. You could contact your insurance agent and see if they will cover the damage. They may even file a claim with the city on your behalf. If you can document the cause you can contact the municipality on how to file a claim. This will of course depend on the laws of your state. Some municipalities are liable for "pot hole" damage also. I don't see how Volvo would be expected to cover this type of damage.

I called my insurance company Friday after I'd heard back from the dealer and filed a claim for consideration - just waiting to hear back from the adjuster today (Hopefully!). At the very least, I have towing coverage I wasn't aware of so they'll reimburse me for that expense! I also called back the dealer to make sure they don't dispose of any parts and pieces they remove before the adjuster gets to see them if desired.
