Power Steering Noise
I have noticed that when making a tight turn, both left and right, there is a pretty noticeable noise coming from the front of the car. The Volvo mechanic says it is normal and that the sound is telling you that you are getting close to the end of the lock. Per the shop tech shims can be inserted to prevent the noise, but reduces your turning radius even more. The sound begins about 10-degrees of a turn before the lock. Has anyone heard of this and are shims really what is necessary?
I can see where the tires are slightly rubbing the inner wheel well that could be part of the sound. Also, the sound in question does not happen when going in reverse.

The steering stops are supposed to get greased once in a while. That is probably the source of the noise. It's normal to happen. Extra shims are not needed. Just a bit of grease should eliminate the noise.
Good to know. I have not had the chance to get a Haynes manual yet, so I will ask here. Are the grease points zerk fittings or do I just slather it on? Is there a special grease required/recommended.
First, unless it's an on-the-road driving emergency, don't turn your steering wheel all the way to either the left or right........just back off slightly when you turn the wheel all the way either right or left. That way you'll prevent the tire rubbing you indicated and perhaps the noise you're hearing. Our V70's tires rub slightly when turning the wheels all the way to the stop positions, especially if the vehicle is going over a slight rise such as into a parking lot. It's the particular Goodyear tires, which are the correct size, that cause this slight rubbing. So, we just slightly back off the wheel when we reach the stop point and hear the rubbing..........you can do the same thing for your situation.
