Default quick brake booster question

as many of you i have the air leak sound coming from the brake pedal on my 02 s60 2.4T AWD.

after reading up on the other threads i understand it's the brake booster, specificaly the vacuum and that besides the constant annoying sound of air leaking the breaks won't suffer from it.
Apprently people have been driving for months even years and no issues.

but there was someone who said his brakes were gone and had a crash because of this.
could this happen?
i asked my local volvo dealer and said i shoudn't worry as if it does happen this will be a gradual process, where the brake pedal is stiffer and harder to opperate and that's when i should be worried.

pedal is as always, goes down easily, pops back up normally so far brakes are ok.(been doing this for about 4 months now)

I don't have the tools/setup to change the brake booster myself and volvo want's a small fortune to change it so i'm thinking of going with it like this for as long as i can.

are there any real risks? should i be seriously looking into changing this part?

would an independent shop be able to do the job properly if i order a refurbished part or do i need to give them specific instructions?
i'm just afraid of people touching my volvo after a bad experience with the tranny.

thanks!

think about it, its your brakes

some people see a check engine light and to fix it they just pop out the dash light bulb, no light no problem right? wrong.

i wouldent screw around with your brakes especially if you have a family who regularly rides along in your car or lol if you live near me and hit my car because of it.

get it done, feel safe and confident that you hit the pedal that you will stop
its a small price when weighed against your life and others

For you own safety and piece of mind replace the booster. It's not worth the unknown.

talked to volvo today and they say they will have to change the whole servo pump to fix the issue and it will cost about 750€ with labor.

is it really necessary to change the entire pump?is that what the official dealer does or could it be they don't know what they are talking about?

forgive my ignorance but is the brake booster the servo pump or just a part of it?

also, if i purchase the part online and take it to an independent shop will they be able to do it or is there a high risk of messing somethig up?

i'll change this part but trying to get it done as cheap as possible.

well.. to my shame i realize the brake booster is the entire part

so my only remaining question is if I buy the part online and take it to an independent shop can they screw something up?
had some bad experience with people that don't know volvo's.

can someone recomend a website where i could find the part cheap?

02 2.4T AWD with DSTC

thanks!

Default Brake booster replacement

Yes, any competent mechanic should be able to do this. I bought a used one here in the states for about $150 and installed it myself. The only real challenge is pulling the master cylinder out of the way. It's not difficult it is just that you do need to bend the lines a bit.
