Is this supposed to be something?

While replacing my ETM, I noticed this thing sticking out of the transmission. Am I missing something? Or does this serve a purpose as it is??

That is a vent for the transmission.

Thank you. I had the same question when I went searching for the "only Volvo would do this to its customers" transmission dipstick. Good think I figured out that wasn't the dipstick!
