Synthetic or Conventional Oil

Synthetic or Conventional Oil
My 2004 S60-R has 55k on it and it has had every single routine maintenance done that Volvo suggests. It has also had it's oil changed every 3000-3500 miles using only Valvoline Conventional 10w-30. My question is this....I want this vehicle to last a long time and eventually plan to mod it up a bit, so should I continue the conventional or switch over to valvoline's synthetic 10w-30? I've heard switching to synthetic can cause leaks, but I've also read up that synthetic is superior to other oils and can give you better longevity and protection in the long run.
Is 55k miles to late to switch to synthetic?
Will it hurt my engine to switch currently?
Will it burn alot of oil for the rest of the time I own it if I switch?
All good solid questions that I'm sure someone has a good answer to

Is 55k miles to late to switch to synthetic? No. You should be fine.Somepeople say switching to synthetic will cause leaks if youdo the switch with high mileage (100,000+) some say it won't cause leaks ever. Tech should have some valuable input on this one.
Will it hurt my engine to switch currently? No. Your turbo will love you long time, loooong time.

RE: Synthetic or Conventional Oil
USE SYNTHETIC. USE SYNTHETIC. USE SYNTHETIC. Believe me, I have used it since Mobil came out with it in the 70s and use it exclusivly. In fact, I use it in an Austin Healy that I purchased new in 1965 in England...............no leaks and believe me, British autos leak oil!
