As you know from my previous post I'm trying to cure the P0014 fault "Exhaust cam position sensor overadvanced" on my 2001 S60 T5. The code started when I changed my timing belt about a year ago. Ever since then the car has run just fine.

Today I took the car back apart to look at the timing. Looking at the cams and the marks, I turned the engine by hand until the intake cam was lined up with the timing mark. I then looked over to the exhaust cam and it was not aligned with the timing mark. The exhaust cam mark is about 2 teeth too far counterclockwise. I then look down and the crankshaft mark and I can't quite tell where it is supposed to be alinged to. I can see the mark on the crank and I see the protrusion on the block that I'm supposed to line it up to. The problem is the mark on the block is odd shaped. It isn't just a defined point. It looks like two protrusions with a span between them. What to I align the mark on the crank to?

Also, can I just turn my exhaust cam with the belt off to line it up with the mark? Sounds like an easy question, but I see a lot of caution posted about locking the cams together so they don't move. Why can't they move, as long as you line them back up with their marks?

There are two short marks on the back part of the crankshaft pulley. They straddle the protrusion to the left- facing the engine. The problem you are having is with the variable valve timing on the exhaust cam. If you had the exhaust cam locked you would see that the exhaust pulley will rotate clockwise approx. 2-3 teeth. You have to advance the pulley with a torx socket on the front and then put the belt on. I did mine after a valve job so everything had to be reset. I don't know why you couldn't line up the crank and intake cam then mark the belt and the exhaust pulley where it is now and then move the exhaust pulley a tooth to the left if you think it's too advanced. Not the best way but without locking the cam I don't know how you would do it.

 

Here's a few pictures that may help. You may have to take the cam position cover off and see if the slot in the exhaust cam is straight across. Then hold it there while you advance the pulley and put on the belt.

 

and u have 2 timing markes on the crakes pully and u put the pionter in the center of the 2 thay will not be strate up and down will be at a 11:00 point and the markes on the pully are on the back of it
